Orphan adalah film psychological thriller garapan produser Leonardo Dicaprio. Ini adalah film ke enam dimana Leo bertindak sebagai produser. Untuk penggarapannya dipercayakan ke tangan sutradara asal Spanyol, Jaume Collet-Serra yang pernah sukses lewat film bergenre slasher, House of Wax. Film yang berdurasi 2 jam 3 menit ini, melakukan pengambilan gambar di sekitar kota Toronto, Port Hope Montreal dan juga Ontario, Kanada.
Sinopsis Orphan
Kate (Vera Farmiga) dan John (Peter Saarsgaard) adalah pasangan suami-istri yang sedang melewati masa sulit dalam pernikahan mereka. Mereka masih berduka karena keguguran yang dialami Kate. Trauma tersebut membuat jiwa Kate sedikit terguncang. Ia menjadi depresi dan mulai berteman dengan minuman beralkohol. Sikap Kate membuat hubungannya dengan John merenggang.
Untuk mengakhiri mimpi buruk tersebut, Kate dan John berusaha mencari cara. Mereka pun memutuskan untuk mengadopsi seorang anak. Maka, pergilah mereka ke sebuah panti asuhan. Di sana, mereka bertemu dengan Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman). Esther adalah anak yang manis dan pintar. Namun, ia memiliki masa lalu yang cukup mengenaskan. Keluarga adopsi terdahulunya meninggal dalam peristiwa kebakaran. Hanya Esther yang selamat dari kecelakaan tersebut.
Pertama kali Kate dan John bertemu Esther, mereka langsung jatuh cinta padanya. Mereka tertarik pada Esther karena kepandaiannya menyanyi dan melukis. Di sisi lain, mereka merasa iba mendengar masa lalu Esther. Maka, mereka pun memutuskan untuk mengadopsi Esther.
Esther pun menjadi anak tengah di keluarga Coleman, selain Daniel (Jimmy Bennet) dan Max (Aryana Engineer). Kate dan John berharap Esther dapat menjadi adik dan kakak bagi kedua anak mereka. Kehadiran Esther diharapkan dapat membawa suasana baru di keluarga tersebut.
Namun, harapan tersebut sepertinya tidak akan pernah terwujud. Perlahan tapi pasti, Esther berubah menjadi anak yang misterius dan labil. Penampilan luarnya yang manis dapat mengecoh semua orang. Justru, ia menjadi pusat kehancuran keluarga Coleman.
Max kecil yang bisu dan tuli selalu diperdaya oleh Esther. Ia sangat kasihan sekali. Begitu juga dengan Danniel. Mereka selalu di ancam agar tidak memberitahu tentang apa yang mereka lihat.
Melihat ketidakberesan pada diri Esther, Kate berusaha memberitahu John. Namun, John tidak memercayai Kate. Ketidakstabilan jiwa dan masa lalu Kate membuat John sedikit apatis terhadap istrinya tersebut. Apalagi saat peristiwa kecelakaan Max akibat keteledoran Kate. John menganggap sikap Kate hanyalah reaksi dari kegelisahan yang berlebihan.
Maka, Kate pun berusaha untuk menyelamatkan keluarganya dari teror yang dilakukan Esther. Ia berusaha mencari tahu identitas dan masa lalu Esther yang sebenarnya. Masa lalu yang akan membuat Kate sangat terkejut. Esther, gadis kecil manis yang berubah menjadi iblis kecil, memiliki rahasia besar yang tidak akan pernah bisa dibayangkan oleh keluarga Coleman.
